I...Sometimes I wish I didn't notice this stuff. I was there, I live in DC, and yeah, it sort of was inspiring, but where are we now? No real difference.

Sometimes I wish I was dumber. American Idol would be the most important thing in my life. I know I would be happier.

You're pretty much the coolest, War Tard. I salute you and your talent.

I am also drinking Vodka... on noon on Monday. You might detect what my opinion is worth.

Heh. Kelly's Heroes. "All those burning bridges"... weirdest music for a war movie ever.

Cheers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-111395980737563171.post-20910098641359157502010-11-23T21:48:13.348-08:002010-11-23T21:48:13.348-08:00one of my high school teachers once told me about ...one of my high school teachers once told me about "the curse of knowledge", and I thought she was bat shit crazy at the time. the worst thing about realizing certain truths in the world is the feeling of powerlessness that comes with it. that and the fact that there is no attractive alternative for you if you don't want to play in this game. a rally is a pitiful comment on the lack of real political power held by the common citizen. it isn't easy to dispel the current modes of power because it's delocalized, it's not just the government, it's not the limited liability corporations; it's a mindset, a way of life. unless human nature suddenly is able to revert its herd like tendencies and short sighted greed, nothing will change.

I'm right there with you on that pessimistic shit.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00643310437404417260noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-111395980737563171.post-48090967000322987052010-11-05T07:37:08.881-07:002010-11-05T07:37:08.881-07:00"Sanity" = codeword for joining the Firs..."Sanity" = codeword for joining the First World by implementing universal health care, reasonable work-life balance measures-- to join the EU, a country must mandate 20 days' guaranteed vacation-- and a reasonable, fair system of elections. Jon Stewart's contention is that if we restore sanity to the political discourse, the 75 percent who just want a better and more just society will coalesce. Since 24 of those 25 insane percent are on the right-wing, and only 1 on the left, this would be a center-left coalition.

We can actually change the system nonviolently, but it's hard. Really, really fucking hard, and we can expect it to take decades, but we should look to the EU countries for models of how this works. Many assumed, wrongly, that just by electing a charismatic, decent, and intelligent person-- one man!-- to the presidency that all of this country's problems would go away. The problems are deeper than that.

I don't want a violent revolution, because those tend to be taken over by the most barbaric individuals within the movement. Idealism gives way to authoritarianism. We've seen this pattern (or, to use a software engineering term, anti-pattern) so many times in other parts of the world.

The only type of "violence" we should be considering is nonviolent property damage, preferably of an informational (e.g. computer viruses) sort. We can't beat Blackwater/Xe with guns (they will murder us and Erik Hitler Prince will rape our dead bodies) but we can shut down their payroll if we have good hackers. Same applies to health insurance problems; if we can hack into their systems, we can reverse and alter their evil decisions (rescissions) without their knowledge. If we're going to upset the corporate elite, we can do it bloodlessly using internal subversion, computer viruses, and jury nullification when our guys get prosecuted for physically harmless, society-improving crimes.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
